Here is a good story. 1978 NBA South Pacific national. I see a guy I know has come in from the mainland for this race. he is not a racer , but looks to be somebody, I ask him a few questions and he tells me that he is Skip Hess and owns Mongoose. Wow I had met someone very important in BMX. Fast forward to 1986, I have just signed to ride for Blue Max and at the BMX products headquarters. Over the intercom to Russ Okawa, the office I am sitting in, I hear a secretary tell Russ to please bring Jason to Skip's office. Boy am I nervous, Russ takes me to Skip, where I am greeted and welcomed to the company. From local novice to sitting in Skip's office, what a dream come true.

Jason, I noticed a few riders that you did not know from the OY. Ed Hicks was Number 50 on the CW, Scott Swanson was in one of the photos I think was number 7w. I was talking with Chad Roberts the other night at the Y and he brought back a night I will never forget. Were you there when Barry's El Camino got a flat and went off the off ramp from the 55 freeway and half way down the dirt hill? We all heard this loud sound and looked over the fence... We were like wow check that out.. We all had no idea it was Barry. A few minutes later Barry comes up to the fence with his bike and helmet hands his bike over the fence to ride practice and race. He said he would take care of his car later.... Good old Barry nothing but BMX!

Jason,

Whats up dude! The 1st photo with Jeff Kosmala(23), Kevin Ridling(11N) and Dave Renfrow(69x). No. 4x is local rider David Wakatake. He rode for the Bike Shop when Rory was also with The Bike Shop. The other picture with Sano, Rory and Rockne....No. 11 is Buddy Ikeda(TBS).......Yeah I remember 2nd gear Iha leading the trophy dash. That was insane! When we went up to the Nats. I got to hang out with Scott Clark and Larry Ruiz he asked me about Iha. He couldn't believe he was just 13. .........

The pic of Rockne in BMXA was when we all went to the Nationals in long beach. The caption said like "some quiet polite guys came up from Hawaii to race but when the gate dropped so did they. This Hawaiian Hombre is Rockne Tang who made both mains in 14-15 Expert and 14-15 Open which isn't the easiest thing in the world to do."

I hope you post more pics....brought back alot of good memories. I am looking forward to the sand island track.....40-45 Cruiser anyone?

Later,
Jeremy

Hey all-

I was fortunate enough to race the 1980 NBA National in Hawaii. The tiki trophy was so cool, it's one of six that I kept from my entire career.

Anyway, below is the two page race report on the race that appeared in an issue of NBA Bicycle Motocross News. I thought you might enjoy.

John Sandberg,

Thanks for posting that. I remember those tiki trophies! I never seen that article before. The 1st pic of the kid sitting on his bike is my bud Rockne Tang. I was his best man at his wedding. This thread sure brought back good memories. Anyone got any other picws/ I 'd be stoked to see more. I'll try and post some pics this weekend.

Remember the Kewalo Basin track? Built on a landfill with wooden jumps... Circa 1977??
