I guess we could start with a roll call from the NBA South Pacific Nationals 1977-79. I did my very first race at the 1978 race. Anyone remember Scott Iha?? He was about 13X and holeshotted and lead trophy dash most of the way till being passed by Scott Clark.
Changstar
There used to be a track in Kona, right? My Dad lives there now - are there any remanants of that track. It was by the old airport I think - anyone ever race there?
Don't make me bust out my ABA District #1 Plates from HI-03 Changstar. LOL!!!!!!!

This can't be an all things Hawaiian thread without this shot!
That's right, the Hawaiian heart-throb, my boy Greg Leasure in full affect!
Leasure,
YOU LOOK GREAT!
What happened?
Johnny, let me correct your grammar......"Leasure, YOU LOOKED GREAT! What happened?"
See how that sounds better Johnny? LOL!
I just knew Johhny Johnson would surface on this thread. He's all about the hawaiian chix!
Guys, don't hate me cuz you ain't me. I was rocking the outside industry sponsorship before any of you even thought about it!
Plus, I was doing can-cans off of Diamond Head daily!
Hawaii No Ka o'i...........

Remember Dennis Navin when he got hit by the bud downtown
Nice Boss Leasure.
I can get you Veltman's autograph.
That's a hellava goat you're rockin.
Was that thing smellin like stale innertube air? LOL!
ChangStar,
That pic above on the starting line.....
Think thats Jeff Kosmala (Mongoose) on the left
and David Rentfro (Torker) on the right.
Think Kevin Ridling is the Patterson racer 11N.
Notice they're running "handcut original" Haro numberplates. SICK!!!!!
I am PROPHYLACTICON Master of the universe!!
Changstar, It seems again that JJ knows more about Hawaii BMX than you!!! Next time just ask JJ directly to name who's who in photos! He's a walking BMX almanac!!
-Leasure
It was a Bus Rick not a bud. Although bud is probably why he got hit by the bus. LOL!!!!!!!
That panning shot of Rory Ingano is sick too!

How about some photos of Rockne Tang and John Llacuna?
I am on the hunt for photo's. Glad I started this thread. Should I just use the photo's that I am ahead of llacuna? Ha ha ha. I remember a picture of Rockne beating Mike Poulson in I think "Bicycles and Dirt". I think it was the race at Magic Mountain. This gave all the locals hope to well in the mainland. I know somewhere I have a pic of Thumper and I waxing Vann Johnson. This is gona be fun. I think in that earlier photo next to Kos is local "The Bike Shop" Buddy Ikeda in Goose colors.
Changstar
The first pic in the thread is Jeff Kosmala (23), ?, Kevin Ridling (11N), Dave Renfrow (69X).
Guess I should have read the earlier posts...duh!
John llacuna
More John
Moki Fernandez
#6 John Llacuna
#1 Rockne Tang
Rory Ingano Robinson jersey
#50 James Katasako
#11??
Malvert Benigno leading, then Rory, Moki, John, James.
What about Kevin Sano???
BTW, I think I might be the only guy on this board to stump Johnny Johnson. I mentioned AZ. Legend Carl "Meat" Webster and he didn't know who it was.
YES!!!!!!!
[ March 17, 2007, 02:08 AM: Message edited by: Thumperpilot ]
you got a good memmory, I'll check.
Changstar
Kevin Sano, Talk about a cool last name. I got a trivia question.
Before Thumper and Lumpia, there was another local Hawaiian to move to AZ and make it big?
Hint:Color Control
Changstar
Hint 2, he is #46
Come on Changstar, that's an easy one, Eric Philipart (spelling???)
I think that was only easy for you, he he. You guys need to find him and get him to the winters cause he go's way back. I think he was racing in the 70's, I never got to know him till about 1980 but remember seeing him at the races before that.
Changstar
Barry Ikeda, factory DG.
Younger bro, Bo Ikeda, won the NBA South Pac nats and beat that factory Shimano kid.
The Tang/ Poulson photo was in BMX Action.
Coverage of the 1980 NBA Grand Nationals.
I was there and got waxed in 12x.
Todd Parry was there and got a 3rd or 4th in 12 or 13 novice. LOL!
You have no idea what it meant to us here to see that pic. I mean here was one of Hawaii's fastest riders in a picture beating Poulson, and we all thought that Poulson was the man.
Changstar
Hey, Chang,
I'm one of the inventor of Bxm in 1973. [ Panda Bike Co. Owner] How big is Bmx in Hawaii now? I live here too.
I have been back for 4 years, so I don't know whats going on in the BMX stuff. My Number. 808-395-1767 .
Randy
Good to hear from you Randy, I'll give ya a call soon , maybe Sunday. No BMX racing at all right, but I am part of a group that is going to bring it to Sand Island.
Changstar
coming soon.
Lets hear from more than the locals, I know many have come over for a race, some may have stayed a while. Some may have a good story spending time with a Hawaiian. Johnny Johnson should have some.
Changstar
Johnny has never even been to Hawaii, he's a moke!
He just like the Asian gals!

PS-Man, all of the girlfriends I had growing up in High School, JJ would have been all over!!

What...no pictures from the Castle Park track? None from the WWBMXA race originally billed as the "World Championships" and was later renamed the "South Pacic Championships" that Ernie Alexander put on in 1980?
coming soon. "Castle Park"
Changstar
Just E mailed Ken Aman, he came with Ernie to that WWBMXA race. Hopefully he has some pictures and a story or 2.
Changstar
John Llacuna, safety gear?
Kevin sano/Miki Fernandez
Darren Higuchi, Orange Y local and neighbor to Toby Henderson
L to R Moki Fernandez, Rockne Tang, Toby Tsukamoto, Darren Cayetano, Kelly Donnarumma, Adrian Lee 1981 states
ChangStar,
I was lost about what you said
in that other post.
I understand now.
Sorry brother I don't know.
This thread rocks!
Glad you took the initiative to start it.
Johnny J, I know know you know a lot about the Hawaiians but how? Did you make friends with them when they were up there or did you spend some time here? Or something else, cause you know about some guys that didn't travel much. can't learn much from Leasure, he buys bike parts from the hardware store, and don't ever ask him to help work on a bike. He is the modern day Tinker J.
Changstar
Leasure and McCully's LOL!!!!!! I used to call it McCully's fish shop. You could buy a BMX bike and fishing gear all in one place. LOL!!!!
I've seen Leasure work on a bike too, now that's great family entertainment there. LOL!!!! He just needs vise grips and a hammer and he's good to go.
A caveman with a rock comes to mind. Greg's the only one I know to get parts from City Mill.
Changstar
More, more, more on this thread!
Man, this thread reminds me of my buddy Shannon Kahahane from Hawaii. He was one of the fastest guys in Northern Cali ( Cal-15 ). I remember him beating the likes of Ritchie Anderson, Jon Anderson, Mike Salido, Van Argerious, Greg Liggins, and a bunch of top bmx racers. Shannon now resides in Sunnyvale, California as a PGA instructor at a golf course.

Grass field and wooden jumps, once a year race out side our sports arena.
Changstar
Chang,
You should make some posters like this!!
-Leasure
Is that by the Blasedale Arena (sp)??
Yep, Mckinley high school field. Would be a cool poster but who would want one?
Changstar
1985 Orange Y, Gold Cup. #1 Changstar, # 2 Kevin Sano, #67 Buckle, 153 forgot his name but we raced him at every track we went to.
Kevin sano, Orange Y
Changstar Orange Y.
43 John Llacuna, CW Ed?, 30 Butcher, 76 Tuni. Not sure on the rest.
67 Barry Nilson, 35 Tom Scalise, 7 jeff Donnel, 2 Kevin Sano, maybe someone knows the rest.
Jeff D ruled Orange. Sano close 3rd.
Jeff D, Sano, and me in the back.
Which rack is ours? Kevin sano picking out some new stuff.
Good stuff there Changstar. Kind of wierd to see Orange Y now, the first straight is on the total other side of the track you are racing on. BTW, we just saw ""he Butcher "at the Sea Otter Classic. He was still tearing it up on the Dual Slalom coarse. Cool dude as always.
Hey old time Orange locals, help out with the photo ID from above.
Changstar
reading thsi post makes me wanna move to hawaii
Cool a-z-z photos Changstar.
Cool old school photos! I used to run around with John and Moki back in the early 80's. They did 2 freestyle contest back in 83 and I entered one of them, bunny hop and long distance. I won the bunny hop contest, but lost the long distance jump to Moki. He had a lighter bike then I did and at that time I was still running my 81 team mongoose. Back then John and Moki was still sponsered by Mongoose, but Moki was slowing down on the racing at that time. I didn't get into the racing seen back then because of funds. I watch some of the PAL races when they had them at Waipahu Gym back in the early 80's. Great times hanging at the Great Outdoors bike shop! Hitting all the local jump spots like Leeward Community College, right by The Bus Stop, behind the Power Plant in Pearl City and to the bike shop. Every week we used to make the bike trek from Waipahu to down town/Ala Moana.
Those were the best of times!!
BMX Joe, If that was the little contest they had at the Great outdoors parking lot, then I was there too. One of them I won the distance. The ride into town to cruise was a must for all Hawaiian BMXers. Nothing like cruising through town and Waikiki with 25 other riders. Remember the Mongoose van?
Changstar
Also a must was the downhill section Tantulas. I remember people falling off the trail into bamboo trees!
-Leasure
Jason- Must have been the first contest, because I did not enter. What bike were you riding? I kind of remember bikes but don't remember the people or names, because it has been about 23 years ago. At that time I was riding my 81 Team Mongoose chrome with black Skyways and Cal lite pad set in black. Chrome and black combo. We must have meet then, but it was so long ago. Yeah I remember that Van! I remember they had a quarter pipe set up with the Van backed up so it would not move. I remember guys just learning how to roll back, because of the Mug Rootbeer commercial with Pat Romano. Some guy on a Hutch was doing them, then I remember that same guy at the 2nd contest riding a GHP. I think he was a racer.
Moki was the first guy I seen do a manual, but he did them standing. Kind of like how guys look when they are doing wheelies on a rice rocket. He did not sit on the seat at all. Even was using slippers!
John Llacuna was alway cool to hang with at the shop and riding. Last time I went to Hawaii (2001) I went their and it was owned by new owners, but they still had Moki's bike trophy and pic on the wall.
Those down town rides were cool!
My friends Sam and Peter Fernado use to make these crazy upside down bikes. 2 Schwinns welded together, one upside down. Almost look like a circus bike. You had to use a long piece of tubing with a steering wheel to manuver/steer it.
Leasure- As for Tantulas, Peter Fernado made what I think was the first GPV ever. Didn't know what to call it back then. Just down hill bike. He converted his Thruster and riveted plates in his Skyway mags to make them disc wheels and painted them silver. He also fabricated a wing in the back of his bike for down force. Add some ten speed generator lights back and front for night riding.
Peter got his ideas from his dad, because his dad was into drag racing and thats how he got most of his ideas. He even had a Schwinn with wheelie bars. At August Ahrens Elementry school we had a so called 1/4 mile bmx drag races. Had a burn out box and Peter even made Christmas tree with lights that worked just like the drags! He even went as far as to keep everyones time and record of it/our races. All of this happened around 1981-1983.
Peter was ahead of his time with his crazy ideas!
Last I heard he was into drag racing at the track, but that was sometime ago. I have not seen him since I moved to Calif. in 1984.
I think I was on a Pro Neck National pro, or a Kuwahara. I remember that Hutch guy hitting the quarter a lot faster than everyone else and blasting a high air to big crash. Unless you are thinking of a small guy that looked 12 but was 14 or 15 named Walter, that seems like the one who may have went from a Hutch to a GHP.
Changstar
Tantulas is a rite of passage for all of us. I remember my friend Roy getting lost and we must have waited almost an hour at the end of the trial for him. We thought he fell off a cliff or just got hurt on the way down. He finaly showed up. Once started down the trial, looking back was dangerous so yelling back and forth was the only way to see how everybody was doing. I guess at some point Roy was last and no one could stop or look back to see where he was. The only way to stop was to crash.
Changstar
Jason-
Walter sounds right! I do remember his name! When I went to go see Return of the Jedi at the theater down town. He was in the parking lot learning how to roll backwards. He was doing it far back then at the contests. I kind of remember the other guy with the Hutch hitting the quarter pipe and crashing. At that time I think there was only 2 Hutch bikes there. The National Pro/Kuwahara is kind of fuzzy in my mind, but I kind of remember the Kuwahara. If so I think you had the only Kuwahara there.I do remember a guy riding a Vector doing frame stand surfers. Fun times blasting those Van Halen tunes from 1984 album at the shows.
We used to ride the cement canals in Waipahu. Those ones that used to irragate water from the suger cane fields. Jumps were all over the place back then.
That story of Roy, I might have heard about that before. Could be from my travels from down town Waikiki with other riders. At that time waiting for Roy, was starting to get dark/sunset?
If so could be the same story.
Do you have any pics of the contest?
wassup! i haven't been on in a while and found this thread. i'm a mainland haole but i've been here 14 years. moilili area. anybody still ride? looked into bmx tracks and heard about wheeler and the new sand island spot. hows that going? i'll definately check that out when it's finished. any bike half pipes on oahu?
You might try the Hickam Hnager Skatepark. When I lived there they had a couple of full half pipes and some pretty sweet stuff to ride. I left there in '93 though. Last time I talked with an old friend the Hickam Park was still going strong. There's also the old 70's skatebowl down by China town. Changstar can tell you were it's at if it's still there. Full on 70's style!!!
i heard and saw pics of the hickam bowl. hopefully civilians can check it out.
Security is up and down so some days it is easy to get in and other times it is no. Only been to the hanger once or twice so not to sure how to get there now. I heard it is still there though. The skate bowl in China town now has a mini park section in the middle. This was done a few years ago when the City built 8 or so skate parks. Have I met you "big-air?
Changstar
Great news! The State published an Environmental Assessment (EA) on the 25th of this month. This means that the 30 day clock has started for public comment on the EA supporting the OHV park at Sand Island which includes the long waited for BMX track. The next step after the public comment period is to have the lease agreement approved by the State DNLR land board. This has been a long couple year process that is finally within sight. The exciting combination of BMX racing, motocross racing, pee wee trail, 4 x 4 courses and ATV track melded into one OHV park is more activities in a central Oahu location than I’d ever dreamed of. The combination of diverse use groups, support for kids education in OHV type sports, partnership with State Parks, and support from local businesses and organizations will hopefully turn this location into the premier location for your off road activities. Stay tuned for future developments!
Changstar
sounds like great news. when might be the earliest construction would start?
no, we never met jason. rode freestyle and bmx in the 80's in KC and was looking to get back into it. i thought if i could find a half pipe or a track, i'd buy another bike. i reeallly hope the track on sand island works out. let me know if you guys need any help with a shovel or whatevers.
I don't know any hawaiian's but would love to go there. jk
Anyone heard of David Shama****a. "Flyin Hawaiian". He was factory Powerlite in the late 80s. Went to school with him. Used to give him rides from his girlfriends house to his. 15. miles on my motorcycle while he held his bike on the back. Dude could ride a wheelie for miles. Really don't know if and when he lived in Hawaii.
Everyone bookmark this sight for Hawaii info.

So if things go as planned, I have always wanted to have an international race here. After all we would be central to:Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, and west coast US. The old ABA Worlds would have been a cool race in Hawaii. So how many of you would make the trip to Hawaii to race?
Changstar
Brah, I had to bump this up to the front so you could check out my hot picture on page 1....don't hate me cuz you ain't me!!
-Leasure
Coming soon to a national near you.
"HULA MAN"
Check out some of the names on the results.
Here is a good story. 1978 NBA South Pacific national. I see a guy I know has come in from the mainland for this race. he is not a racer , but looks to be somebody, I ask him a few questions and he tells me that he is Skip Hess and owns Mongoose. Wow I had met someone very important in BMX. Fast forward to 1986, I have just signed to ride for Blue Max and at the BMX products headquarters. Over the intercom to Russ Okawa, the office I am sitting in, I hear a secretary tell Russ to please bring Jason to Skip's office. Boy am I nervous, Russ takes me to Skip, where I am greeted and welcomed to the company. From local novice to sitting in Skip's office, what a dream come true.
Changstar
Jason, I noticed a few riders that you did not know from the OY. Ed Hicks was Number 50 on the CW, Scott Swanson was in one of the photos I think was number 7w. I was talking with Chad Roberts the other night at the Y and he brought back a night I will never forget. Were you there when Barry's El Camino got a flat and went off the off ramp from the 55 freeway and half way down the dirt hill? We all heard this loud sound and looked over the fence... We were like wow check that out.. We all had no idea it was Barry. A few minutes later Barry comes up to the fence with his bike and helmet hands his bike over the fence to ride practice and race. He said he would take care of his car later.... Good old Barry nothing but BMX!
Were any of you locals extras in the movie "North Shore"???!!!
WOW! Great pics and even better stories, thanks for sharing guys. Best thread I have seen.
Jason,
Whats up dude! The 1st photo with Jeff Kosmala(23), Kevin Ridling(11N) and Dave Renfrow(69x). No. 4x is local rider David Wakatake. He rode for the Bike Shop when Rory was also with The Bike Shop. The other picture with Sano, Rory and Rockne....No. 11 is Buddy Ikeda(TBS).......Yeah I remember 2nd gear Iha leading the trophy dash. That was insane! When we went up to the Nats. I got to hang out with Scott Clark and Larry Ruiz he asked me about Iha. He couldn't believe he was just 13. .........
The pic of Rockne in BMXA was when we all went to the Nationals in long beach. The caption said like "some quiet polite guys came up from Hawaii to race but when the gate dropped so did they. This Hawaiian Hombre is Rockne Tang who made both mains in 14-15 Expert and 14-15 Open which isn't the easiest thing in the world to do."
I hope you post more pics....brought back alot of good memories. I am looking forward to the sand island track.....40-45 Cruiser anyone?
Later,
Jeremy
Hey all-
I was fortunate enough to race the 1980 NBA National in Hawaii. The tiki trophy was so cool, it's one of six that I kept from my entire career.
Anyway, below is the two page race report on the race that appeared in an issue of NBA Bicycle Motocross News. I thought you might enjoy.
John Sandberg,
Thanks for posting that. I remember those tiki trophies! I never seen that article before. The 1st pic of the kid sitting on his bike is my bud Rockne Tang. I was his best man at his wedding. This thread sure brought back good memories. Anyone got any other picws/ I 'd be stoked to see more. I'll try and post some pics this weekend.

Aloha Kevin! I thought it was you and Andy that did the GT tour in Mililani???? darn my pics are too big to attach here, If you check out www.os-bmx.com that's were I saw Andy's birthday pictures. He still rides good!
Wow sorry to hear about his family! He told me that he did not have much pictures of him riding.
I saw Wally's website.. Wow things have changed for him.
Have you heard from Adam or Jordan?
I miss riding over to honolulu...
I just lost my mother back in July... We are selling both houses back there. I live here in Dallas, TX with my wife and kids, I'm a front end manager for Costco. And I'm restoring a 84 Torker pro xl. I'm teaching my 8 year old son how to ride. He has it easy... he does not have to learn how to ride with slippers! lol
Well dude shoot me line again I'd like to hear from ya!
jk,
i think that wally at bikefactory still talks to him. that would be the best way. jim used to have racer video, a video editing business, but i'm not too sure if he still does it.
